I wish the seller would have mentioned that in the product description and offered a discount as a result. Then I could have decided whether to pay more for an unopened package, or buy the torn one at a discount. I was embarrassed to give it as a gift in that condition :(

(More customer reviews)Pros - Assembly was easy and fast. Rack is rock solid. Doesn't wobble or sway in transit. Rack swings out far enough for truck tailgate to come down. Unloading camping gear with bikes in rack was a breeze. Security cable is a plus!
Cons - The rubber straps aren't permanently attached and don't lock in to their starting position easily. They Lost one right away. Order an extra set. Also- order the quick attach locking bolt. The bolt for the neck of the trailer hitch means you need a rachet set or wrench every time you want to take the rack off. The lock for the security cable is not included.
This was our first rack. We are "occassional" users. (Car camping, local bike trail, etc.) Good rack for us. If you are hauling women's or girl's bikes order the mounting adaptor. Adaptors much less expensive online. We didn't order them with the rack. Rookie mistake. Wish the instructions had some pointers on best way to mount four bikes.
Overall - Great value!

Just came back from a weekend camping trip. Had a chance to compare notes on racks with a couple of people (and check out their bike racks). When I compare what we got for what we paid to what they got to what they paid... we definitely got the better value!!

(More customer reviews)MAKE YOUR OWN - This part is a total waste of money. I went to REI to pick-up this lock, when I asked the salesman the price he told me $50! I asked him why I could not simply use a small piece of chain to connect the rack to the trailer hitch. He told me I would be better off doing that and said just last weekend they had broken one off for a customer, with a single whack with a hammer (on the lock side which is thin evidently).
I picked up a small length of strong chain for $2.09 at the hardware store, put it through an old bike inner tube so it would not clang against the hitch and used two old padlocks to lock the chain ends to the rack and the trailer hitch (which is bolted and spot welded onto the car). So please, don't waste your money on the Thule STL2 Snug-Tite Lock II, MAKE YOUR OWN!

(More customer reviews)We had one of these of unknown age and it broke when the bike toppled over - to much leverage on the plastic. We liked it enough to replace it, and now we have the "rack" on both Mom and Dad's bikes and one seat. I've used both front-mounted and rear-mounted seats and neither is ideal - it's a little awkward and wobbly one way, versus the other. But biking with the child is still wonderful. This doesn't hold that big a child, our girl is four, petite, about 30 lbs, and her legs are down at the bottom of the "holsters" for her feet. I think this is a good model, the price is good, and it gives you a "rack" you can use with a bungie cord for carrying this or that instead of the child seat. Easy to mount on and off.

Even following all of the recharging instructions exactly, it will not hold a charge long enough to inflate my raft. My Intex would fill at least 2 rafts of similar size on one battery charge. It also would run on DC power after the battery was dead which this one will not.

(More customer reviews)I've used a mule for 2 years to cart my SUP to the beach. It works great and allows you to use a bike to get to the sand and then use the Mule to hand cart the board to the water's edge easily. If parking is a problem near the beach then having one of these in your car with a bike on board allows you to park a mile or more from the water and still lets you transport your board there with relative ease.
Pros-
When it is folded up the mule is COMPACT and as portable as a briefcase.
It easily can fit and STAY in a car trunk or a board bag... pull it out whenever needed.
You can use it on sand and roads, walking or behind a bike.
You can wrap your paddle head in a towel and stuff it in the board sock and cart it to the beach easly with the board.
Cons-
It has to be assembled... a few small parts need to be kept track of.
Straps can tangle with bike if not properly stowed.
It has to be well fitted to your board and adjusted for use on a bike so that the board does not sag and hit the rear bike wheel, for this reason is not the best for a LONG or hilly bike rides to the beach but it will get you there.
One must be careful that the strap that goes on the bike seat does not slip off the side of the seat causing the board to sag onto the rear tire of the bike. Fortunately the mule board cover will protect the board in this event.
In spite of the above inperfections this little gadget it worth the insurance it provides getting you to a crowded beach with your board, without the need for a car or the pain of sore arms!

Adams Trail-A-Bike Baby Seat Review

(More customer reviews)I have the Adams Child Seat, and used it all last summer with my 1.5-2 year old daughter.
She likes it much better than being in a trailer. I put a bell on the little plastic handle so she can ring it. It works pretty much as expected.
It's a big advantage for riding on the road, as the 1-wheel trail-a-bike is much narrower and more maneuverable than a trailer. I needed another solution, as the over-rear-rack bike seat had my feet hitting hers on every pedal rotation. (Neither of my bikes has touring-type chainstay length)
The product would be better with a 5-point harness, rather than the three-point, I think.
When she falls asleep, she can slump pretty far to the side. No danger of falling out as the harness works pretty well, but it can make the bike tough to handle. Ditto if she's bored and whipping herself back and forth, or sees something and swings around.
I'm 5'11" and 190 lbs, and she's ~30 lbs. I'm an experienced rider but not super strong. On my light nimble road bike (56cm, traditional frame) the steering is a little tricky. Standing to pedal is especially tricky, better with practice of course. I would not recommend it for an unsure or much smaller/weaker rider.
On my mountain bike, which is heavier but also has the sloping top tube, the trail-a-bike attaches lower and is fundamentally more stable. The lower gears are very much appreciated uphill and take away a lot of the standing to pedal issues.
The seat on the back was definitely easier to handle. I would recommend that as a better, safer, and more manageable solution if your bike fit and the child seat allow it, or for as long as they allow it. Pulling the trail-a-bike is also a lot more work.
I've got the Trek brand trail-a-bike-style, and I think I needed a seatpost shim for this seat to fit properly. But any bike shop should have that.
I see that most of my comments would probably apply to hauling any child on a trail-a-bike, but I think a child old enough to hold themselves up would present less of a balance problem? I guess I'll find out in 18 months or so.
As a final note, I sound kind of negative but overall I think the product does about as well as could be expected. I just wanted something narrow and nimble so I could ride in the hills again, and a big floppy weight is a tough problem.

SportRack A30902 4EZ Hitch Platform 4 Bike Rack Review

(More customer reviews)Pros: this rack carries 4 bikes without any of them touching, and they are supported exactly the way they are designed to be supported. The carrier appears indestructible. If you have a lift back, the hatch can be opened when the carrier is mounted (but not when the bikes are on the rack). Any size or shape bike can be carried. When driving, the bikes are secure and silent.
Cons: weight -- the disadvantage to indestructibility is that a lot of steel was used to build the rack, and that makes it heavy (about 60 lbs without bikes). This weight only comes into play when putting the carrier on your car, or taking it off. loading -- If you have a lift-back, you need to get into it before the bikes are loaded. The upright bars can be tilted away from the back of the car far enough to open the back. length -- you have to remember that this carrier is sticking out a few feet behind your car. Storage -- even folded up it takes a lot of room in your garage.
We need to carry several bikes at a time: road, hybrid and "step-through" (ladies) -- and sometimes a mountain bike.
The wheels fit in lower channels, which may be adjusted for wheel length and to avoid interfering with the next bike's pedals. Then the "hold down" hook keeps the bike firmly in the channels, and the hooks are well padded. You can leave your frame pump on the bike if you want (although a rough road may vibrate it off if it's not secured). Finally, Velcro straps across the tires ... well, I'm not sure what these are for, but we use them. Once on, the bikes don't sway or bounce relative to the car, and any shocks are delivered through the tires -- where the bikes are meant to receive shocks.
A 2 inch receiver will allow for 350lbs -- or more -- of tongue weight. A 60 lb rack and 4 40 lb bikes will only be 220 lbs, well within the limits of the receiver. If you've got the hitch, you can handle the weight.
The assembly is not straightforward: it took me about an hour, and I had leftover pieces. After it was assembled I realized that I mounted the "hold-down" bars in reverse (the long one has to be in before the short one). Assembly is a one-time event, and, while difficult, should not dissuade you from getting the rack.
Tilting the upright bars, or shrinking the carrier from four to two bikes is done by moving cotter pins. The receiver has a screw-in bolt to keep it mounted to the car. Adjusting the wheel wells or hold-down hooks is done using handles that screw in or out.
Once the rack is adjusted for your bike, getting the bikes on and off is quick and simple.
For us, this is exactly the rack we need to carry 3 or four bikes at a time for any distance.

Burley TAIL WAGON Pet Bicycle Trailer Review

(More customer reviews)I picked this trailer up so I could get my exercise in while hauling my dog a few miles to a beach where she gets her workout. The purchase of this unit was a complete splurge, but I am happy with it. The quality of construction and materials used is very good. The assembly manual is not so hot, nor is there much information around on how to acclimate the dog to it. For example, there is a flap at the back of the trailer that folds down and allows the dog to merely step in. It took me a while to recognize all of the great features on this trailer. The video is a short clip, but shows how nicely the trailer tows. It fits behind both the hybrid shown in the video and my touring bike that has 700mm tires. The manual could have had better pictures about how to connect the trailer to the bike, and how to remove the front stroller wheel from the trailer tongue and reconnect the safety tow-strap. It took me a while to figure out.
There are D-rings inside of the trailer that I tie her leash to. It took some trial and error. Basically, I needed to shorten her leash so she wouldn't jump out of the forward end of the trailer. The dog likes to have the front cover rolled-up rather than rolled-down. She would paw at the front canopy when it was in the rolled-down (closed) position.
There are some pouches on the rear exterior fold-down flap that get covered by the rear exterior roll-up cover. The pouches are small and won't hold very much.
The trailer came with a flag on a pole but I don't use it. I also don't use the stroller attachments (the front wheel and the push-handle).
There is a brake that "jams" the rear wheels. It works fine but I think I'm going to take it off to get rid of the weight (even though the weight savings would be minimal).
There is a kickstand on the front end of the trailer that works great. I was thinking of taking it off too but it is pretty convenient.
The trailer does not rattle objectionably. My riding speed is slower, but that's ok because my wife can now keep up with me comfortably. I get a great workout from it. It works fine on paved roads, gravel roads, and on decent "easy" trails. I have not tried it on "moderate" trails yet.
The dog in the trailer is around 35 pounds. She will grow to around 45 pounds, but there will be plenty of room for her. A big lab or golden would fit pretty well. It would be a no-go imo for a medium German shepherd or medium Rottie.
I thought my wife was going to kill me for spending the money, but her first reaction was "that is soooo cute". It really is. She is not very happy about the fact that the trailer, with the dog in it, is a "babe magnet". That's not an advertised feature that may be beneficial to some users!
The only downside to me about the product is its cost, which is legitimate due to the high quality of construction, but it is a splurge.

The product looks fantastic when you first receive it but after about a year the colors fade and the enamel breaks down. The manufacturer was very accommodating in replacing the product the first time this happened about a year after I bought it. Now a year later the replacement is doing the same thing again and I'm reluctant to ask them to replace it a second time.

(More customer reviews)I bought this from my dealer with my new Pilot Touring, but ended up returning it and getting the Thule roof mount system. I thought that this would allow you to load up two bikes and then swing them out of the way to access the hatch. It doesn't you must remove the bikes from the rack and - only after removing the bikes - it allows you to pivot the rack downwards towards the ground to access the hatch. It is actually easier - once the bikes are removed - to just pull it out of the hitch receiver and remove the rack than it is to pull the pin and pivot the whole thing down.
This might work OK for someone as an inexpensive solution, but don't expect you will be able to access your hatch with a loaded rack. It doesn't work the same way as the similar hitch mount Thule system (which is three times the price).

Assembly was mostly easy, however there were a couple of holes that didn't quite line up properly, nothing a little grinding with the dremmel wasn't able to fix. While it is a little annoying to have to fix small manufacturing errors like that, for the price of this unit, vs the prices of every other one I'd been able to find I'm still very happy with it.
As far as function goes, my parents have used it several times and are very pleased with it. My mothers powerchair loads easily and the rack has plenty of tie down points available. It even includes pre-drilled holes for mounting your license plate to since the chair will likely obscure it.
